The Most Dangerous Phrase in the English Language

The most dangerous phrase in the English language: Donald Trump is president.

Totally kidding. In all seriousness, if you Google search "the most dangerous phrase in the English language" this is what you'll get - we've always done it this way. I don't know about you all, but I, from the bottom of my heart, hate this phrase. I used to have a boss who used this line all the time. Whenever I would try and make suggestions or improvements, she would just combat them with "don't try and change it - we've always done it this way", to which I would then rebuttal by walking away and rolling my eyes. I couldn't help but question why the hell I was hired as a marketing assistant if my suggestions weren't going to be taken seriously.

On the one hand, I get it. Change is hard. Doing something that isn't part of your normal routine is scary, holds a lot of uncertainty, and is sometimes a lot of work; I can totally understand why people want to resit it. That being said, I think that very few great things happen within your comfort zone. If you want to truly succeed in your business, your health, or life in general, you have to be willing to step outside of what is comfortable, and make changes.

Social media marketing is a perfect example of one of those scary, but necessary changes. Too many companies today think that because they've never needed social media in the past, they'll be fine without it in the future...one of those "we've always done it this way" situations. But here's the thing, in 2016 Millennials overtook Baby Boomers as the largest generation. That means that Millennials (individuals ranging about 20-36 years old) are now the largest group of consumers, and as a business, one of your best ways of reaching this group is through platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Luckily, adapting to social media marketing can be a pretty easy change to make. Most platforms have been designed to be relatively user-friendly, even for people as digitally-savvy as Aunt Agnes.

Or, you always have the option of seeking out help from a third party. There are a ton of companies out there who are willing to help other businesses with this kind of thing. Whether you want someone to teach you how to do it, or just do it for you (see our last blog post: Finding a Social Media Management Agency That is Right for Your Business & Your Brand), finding help shouldn't be hard.

We know that change is scary, but don't let it be the downfall of your business, or any aspect of your life. Take a chance, make a change and never use the phrase "we've always done it this way"!
